214. Sullivan by Caroline’s Spine

Since I started posting my favorite music of all time with a song by Caroline’s Spine, the next song is again, by Caroline’s Spine.

This song is about 5 boys from Waterloo, Iowa who were all drafted into World War II, leaving their mother alone at home. The song tells about how the mother waits for them to come home, only receiving non-detailed letters about their
situation on a battleship in the South Pacific. In the end of the song,
she receives a telegram from Uncle Sam (the US Government) saying all
her sons have passed away.

The movie “Saving Private Ryan” (which is one of my favorite movie of all time) is somewhat based on this song.

This song is also included in their 1997 album, Monsoon.

Sullivan by Caroline’s Spine

It’s not hard to reach back to the day
Underneath an iowa sun.
Running to the tower of waterloo, looking
For the sullivan train to come.
His five boys would run to the top and
Salute him as he went bye.
First we’d wave hello.
Then we’d wave goodbye.

It’s not hard to reach back to the days
After the attack on pearl.
Overnight my buddies turned into men,
Running out of time for games and girls.
The sullivan boys were not overlooked
Uncle sam calling each by name.
The very next day they left on a mystery
Train.

Say goodbye, bye, bye, mrs. sullivan
Don’t you cry, cry, cry, cry, cry.
“we regret to inform you
The navy has taken your sons away.”
So put your blue star in the window.

It’s not hard to reach back to her smile,
When she received the letter.
The letters, they sounded generally the
Same it said: “if they couldn’t
Be home, at least they were together on a
Mighty fighting battleship,
Somewhere in the south pacific.”
The letters never got much more specific.

Say goodbye, bye, bye, mrs sullivan
Don’t you cry, cry, cry, cry, cry.
“we regret to inform you
The navy is keeping your sons away.”
All five, five, five, five.
So keep your blue star in the window.

It’s not hard to reach back to the day
When the war finally came home.
Uncle sam will send you a telegram, so he
Doesn’t have to tell you over the phone.
I heard she cracked up, when they found
Out what the war had cost,
And all five of her boys were lost.

Say goodbye mrs sullivan
Go ahead and cry.
“we regret to inform you that all your sons
Have passed away.”
…..all five!
So change your blue star to gold.

This song by the way is a true story.

213. Wallflower by Caroline’s Spine

Starting today I will be posting some of my favorite music of all time. Most of them are old alternative rock songs that I used to listen and request in NU 107. Some songs I just like for the melody but most of them has personal meanings to me, particularly with the lyrics.

To start with, I will post a song by a very talented rock band from Tulsa, Oaklahoma. This is not their biggest hit but one song that I really, really like so much because I am a wallflower. The lyrics will speak for itself for me.

This song is included in their 1997 album, Monsoon.

Wallflower by Caroline’s Spine

I could have died, maybe I should have died
When I saw you walk inside
And as you shut the door I put my eye back on the floor
When all I really wanted was to look some more
Does a wallflower play or does a wallflower stay on his wall?

You see, I live alone, but I’ve made my happy home
All my furniture is centered around my phone
And I’m waiting for a call, my imaginary friends and all
Those who would never let me be taken by the fall
Does a wallflower know when it’s time he outgrow his wall?
Tell me does a wallflower know when it’s about time he outgrow his wall?
Yeah, his wall

Time and time and time and time and time and only time
Has feeling for me
Maybe, maybe father time will feel sorry for me
I knew, I knew when there was a time when I knew it all
Why don’t I ever leave my wall?
Why don’t I ever leave my wall?
…I don’t ever leave my wall.

You know that siren’s getting louder
And these people are starting to crowd in on me
All I smell and taste is garlic and gun powder
‘Cause I shot the bad guy dead, but he got me in the head
With the girl of my dreams, she’s mentioning to me how much I’ve bled

Where do the wallflower go
When their flowers get pulled from this wall?
Oh, and though she says I’m brave and bold,
She knows a flower cannot hold up a wall
I can’t hold up this wall any longer
Oh, any longer
‘Cause all I have is time and time and time
My only friend time and time, please some more time
I think I’m over…
